Artist Spotlight: b. gregory jewelry

Beth Gregory constructs artisan jewelry from her studio in beautiful Livingston, Montana. Her business, b gregory jewelry, offers handcrafted works in silver and enameled copper. Her mission is to transform recycled metal into an elegant creation; one that ultimately speaks to the client and complements their appearance.

Describe your work.
I construct artisan jewelry using techniques in traditional silversmithing, precious metal clay, and copper enameling. Each piece of b gregory jewelry is created with the wearer in mind, designed to be unique, becoming, and easy to wear.

How did you get started in the crafts business?
Five years ago, my friend Lisa bought a tiny kiln and a packet of precious metal clay. It sat untouched, until Lisa asked me to figure out what to do with it. I was hooked! I soon bought my own kiln, took a slew of workshops, and started my jewelry business!

How long have you been wholesaling?
I started wholesaling at the beginning of 2016.

What percentage of your business is Wholesale? Retail? Commission, etc.?
30% of b gregory jewelry's accounts are wholesale. The rest are commission-based accounts in the mountain states region.

What are your top 3 marketing methods for reaching new buyers?
I joined IndieMe with the goal of reaching new buyers outside of my region. I have been expanding my online presence through a website makeover and increased engagement on social media. My most fun marketing method has been partnering with a local wine bar to hold holiday trunk shows in conjunction with their promotions of music and wine tastings.

How has IndieMe helped your business?
I joined IndieMe at the beginning of 2017. Listing on IndieMe has led to new wholesale accounts. It also helped me connect with Smart Retailer Magazine, which recently featured me in their magazine.

What advice do you have for new craft artists?
I think most craft artists need to approach marketing their work through many avenues. A great way to start is by approaching local galleries and shops about carrying your work. There is generally a lot of support for local artists. Participation in summer art festivals and holiday markets can lead to contacts in new regions and help expand your network of followers. Creating a strong online presence is also important.

What advice do you have for new craft galleries?
Galleries and artists ultimately have the same goal. Strong, consistent communication between galleries and artists is the best way to make sure that expectations are clear and that both have a positive experience with the partnership.
